Let’s talk goal setting.
We’re well past the halfway point of January, but it’s never too late to put your goals and intentions out there into the world!
This is the first post in a series on goals. For years, I’ve wanted to share my goal-setting system with you so that you can get a glimpse of my process and for personal accountability.
It’s a system that I continually refine year after year, but one thing has remained constant - the relationship between macro and micro.
With my calendar open and my overarching “why” and values in mind, I reflect on the previous year and reevaluate all areas of my life and business. Then I use a journaling tool called PowerSheets to get intentional about the specific changes I want to focus on in the year ahead.
These are broad intentions rather than detailed SMART goals. Every intention has many roads to success, and I will be working on very specific goals throughout the year that are associated with each - that is where my SMART goals will come into play.
It’s important to remember your big-picture vision. Individual goals are strategy steps along the way, but they are not the dream itself!
Additionally, goals may only last a season. An actor’s super-objective - what drives them to action throughout the play - remains constant, but an actor’s objective changes at the start of each new scene.
Likewise, your goals need the freedom to shift as your own life changes and grows. Goals that I thought were imperative to achieve a year or two ago are no longer relevant and new goals continually pop up and surprise me.
My “why” and my values, however, have remained constant, and I find new ways to live those out every day. This rhythm of change is the beauty of life, and I can’t wait to see what the new year brings!
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." - Friedrich Nietzsche
