So You Want to Perform?

Do you want a sense of community and belonging?

Do you want to collaborate with inspirational people?

Do you want an outlet for relaxation and expression?

Do you want to advance a cause or a mission?

Do want to help others through your art?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the ability to perform is completely within your power.

It's time to discern what truly matters to you when evaluating performance opportunities, and then go forth and live by those values.

Because I promise you that your love of performing goes far beyond the desire for money, fame, validation or the need to be chosen.

If you want to perform while making a positive impact and contribution to society, then here are some performance opportunities to consider:

  1. Sing in veterans centers, senior centers, homeless shelters, hospitals and hospices for people who otherwise would not have access to music. Vocal Ease, Sing for Hope and Sing for Your Seniors are wonderful organizations to check out in NYC.

  2. Join a church choir. "To sing is to doubly pray," and there are amazing choirs of all faiths and musical genres in every city.

  3. Perform at cafés, bars, restaurants and open mics. The Duplex, Don't Tell Mama and Actoria are a few options in NYC to try out new material and maybe even get people singing along.

  4. Bring music to the people. Busk in the subway or in the park. Take advantage of public pianos to bring music and a smile to passersby.

  5. Perform house concerts. Offer your services to friends and family for a fun night of food, socializing and intimate entertainment. House concerts are also a great way to raise money for a cause.

  6. Join a community choir or theatre company. Some community groups have healthy budgets and fantastic people at the helm. Explore a new role or style, meet people, practice leadership skills and step outside of your comfort zone.

  7. Perform in a benefit. Use your voice to raise awareness and funds for an organization or mission that you support.

  8. Sing on social media. Hearing your voice will bring so much happiness to those who know and follow you, especially those who may not live close by.

  9. Produce your own project. What do megastars like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Reese Witherspoon and Beyoncé all have in common? They produce their own work! Self-producing ensures that you maintain complete creative control as you bring your artistic vision to reality.

What other potential opportunities can you add to the list?

It's time to adopt a fresh perspective, share your art with heart, and be the performer you've always dreamed of becoming.
